Located in the heart of the Old Port of Montreal, our project metamorphosed a former commercial space into an
exceptional residence, combining tradition and conservatism with an avant-garde and minimalist design.
Our goal was to offer each space a unique aesthetic by harmonizing the new with the existing.
We wanted to preserve and enhance the warmth of wood by combining it with
new materials, both in color and geometry. From the basement to the
mezzanine, each room sports this warm atmosphere thanks to elements such
as columns or wooden beams. The staircases are no exception to this rule and
also incorporate wood accents.
The choice of dekton to modernize the spaces was self-evident, bringing
richness and refinement to the rooms where it is used. We therefore favored this
cladding in areas such as the kitchen, bathrooms and powder rooms.
The original windows provided natural lighting at the front of the building, which we
complemented by installing recessed lighting, wall sconces and
suspension fixtures to highlight the common spaces. Because the room on the
mezzanine requires special privacy, we equipped the windows with an
electric system to control their opacity.
In a concept with sober, neutral colors, the green leather banquette comes
to bring a touch of bold color to the dining room space, sublimated
by the lighting above the table that highlights the detail of the “lady fingers” of the
banquette. The ogival windows inserted into the kitchen backsplash echo the
immense stained glass windows of Notre Dame Basilica, a perfect choice given the
over ten-foot ceiling height.
We gave a second life to a wrought-iron entry door by integrating it
as a partition adjacent to the railing of the staircase leading to the basement. This
solution preserves visual continuity and avoids shadowy areas.
The Brésoles project is a harmonious and timeless achievement. From the creation of
light sources for a once dark basement to the combination of
ancient and modern materials, such as wood columns and beams, brick wall
apparent and dekton, we are confident that this project will stand the test of time.
