GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 15th edition
Discipline : Landscape & Territories
Categories : Landscaping / Courtyard : Gold Certification
These two architects had been living on this forest-fronted property for several years when the landscaping process was initiated. Three major issues guided the design of this project. First of all, the worrying increase in traffic on the road where the residence is located, the ambient noise related to this growing traffic and finally the deforestation of the land caused by the emerald ash borer.
The clients wanted to be able to enjoy their land and the nature that was nearby. The cutting down of many ash trees gave the impression that the land was left to its own devices and the gentle imprint that nature once had was giving way. All living areas were carefully redesigned and then reintegrated into the development.
The installation of gabions to fill the need for privacy and the integration of the waterfall seemed a natural solution to the project’s challenges. Even though they are imposing, these stone giants remain in symbiosis with the nature already present on the site.
Once the living spaces were redesigned and the ambient noise reduced, this development became a prime location for entertaining, gathering and relaxing. Having always been a priority for the clients, nature has reclaimed its place within this uncluttered landscape.
