GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 15th edition
Discipline : Communication & Branding
Categories : Environmental Design / Signage : Bronze Certification
In designing for what would become the largest ice centre to date in North America, the Centre de glaces required signage that would not only define the place and purpose of its state-of-the-art architecture but democratize it as well. As the facilities united brand-new speed skating track with the hockey rinks of an existing sports complex, graphical elements had to be grounded in coherent communication, where they would be as recognizable for locals as they would for international visitors to ensure fluid and instinctive wayfinding, orientation, and circulation to the center's many services and areas. The strategy behind the developed signage focused on making discreet interventions in the space, gestures that could seamlessly integrate into the stark lines of the architectural designs surrounding them while helping to orient clientele. The new ice ring is united with the pre-existing sports complex through spaces defined by colour. Areas that are well known to the facilities’ past users are now better distinguished, including the Robert-Chevalier and Roland-Couillard rinks, highlighted in blue and red respectively, while the new Gaétan-Boucher ice ring stands apart with its blues and whites.
