Playing on the duality between an academic institution’s urban identity and the picturesque character of its locus, this sweeping master plan focuses on the future restoration and rehabilitation of the Université de Montréal’s mountainside campus. It’s here that an institution’s signature on its city finds promise in a far-reaching transdisciplinary range of innovations: An original vision that addresses expansions of the campus’ real estate development and landscape assets, the protection of the university’s architectural, natural and artistic heritage have been refined to recognize the Aboriginal character of the mountain while putting new sustainable developments in place for both the environment and the health and well-being of the site’s users.The existing campus is now not only preserved but strengthened with balanced interventions that frame its outdoor spaces with compatibility, versatility and discernibility: Surroundings are enriched with greater biodiversity, exceptional new views of the city unfold, mobility is improved between both the site’s own pavilions and with nearby neighborhoods, the traffic network is redeveloped to give priority to active transportation, and new outdoor gathering spaces and moments of public art are established. Developed through a process of thorough diagnoses, a principled vision, and consultation from the public as well as specialists from the university’s own faculties, the forward-looking nature of this institution’s identity and environment are protected while noninvasively solving space deficits with mindful practices.
