Next time you’re walking through your neighbourhood park, take a good look at what’s there: probably a swing set, some slides and a jungle gym. Now imagine that along with the usual playground equipment, city governments also equipped our local parks with something else: permanent, accessible structures for a broader, multigenerational audience, designed to showcase arts and culture.
That vision – bringing art to people where they live, work and play – led to the creation of these arches, the flagship in an expanding line of outdoor art furniture that’s both rugged and graceful. Designed to accommodate display panels of varying formats and sizes, they create an inviting outdoor feature for displaying art and culture that’s also a standalone work of public art in its own right.
During the day, the interior of the arches offers shade and seating that invite contemplation of the artwork on display as well as spontaneous discussion. At night, the lighting is programmed to evoke a traditional lantern.
LED strips built into the arch change colours every hour. The spotlights dedicated to the artwork also shine through the laser-cut pattern on the arches, extending the design onto the sidewalk and the wall surrounding the structures. A left-to-right gradient motion in the ambient lighting creates an additional movement effect, drawing in passers-by with a warm, comforting feeling.
Finally, the arches are designed from the start to be ‘good citizens’ of their neighbourhoods, contributing to the social and physical well-being of our communities. Their distinctive shape draws the eye without obscuring the landscape, giving an additional purpose to public space as a platform for residents of all ages and abilities to discover and enjoy arts and culture in an accessible way.
