The Îlot Balmoral has as its distinguishing feature a huge, bright red “fault line,” a divide whose vibrant hue evokes the colour motif of the Quartier des spectacles, creating a powerful association with the city’s entertainment district. This opening splits the building into two to reveal a full-height atrium that allows light to penetrate deep into the building’s interior and illuminate the walkways bridging the two distinct volumes. The red wall of the Îlot’s northern portion folds inwardly before touching down, adding airiness and transparency to the ground floor and creating an illusion of flotation. Located in an emblematic sector of Montréal, the Îlot Balmoral is becoming a central point and a major player in its environment, hosting in particular the headquarters of the National Film Board (NFB).
