Located in the urban core of downtown Montreal, Humaniti is a recent construction of 39 floors that promotes the human experience and the spirit of community. Its hybrid vocation requires the use of signage adapted to the different spheres of life by addressing users of residential sectors as well as those of hotels, offices and commercial areas. The agency thought about how to highlight the different routes to access the shared spaces as well as the living areas where access is restricted.
For the sake of overall cohesion, three predominant characteristics of the architecture and Humaniti’s visual identity have been retained to shape the signage concept:
– The first is the use of sharp angles and triangular pixels which made it possible to compose the background grid used to modulate the graphic elements.
– The second parameter is the half-open outline mesh treatment that forms the official Humaniti logo. The agency was inspired by this to draw the anatomy of the numeric characters that identify the levels and developping a coherent family of pictograms.
– The third specificity considered is the use of neutral tones to echo the communications of the complex. The matte black combined with the white typography create a strong contrast while remaining sober when integrating into the premises.
From a perspective of inclusion, relief interventions offer a dimension of universal access by being perceptible to the touch. The numbers in volume also contribute to energizing the corridors, by offering plays of shadows and light according to the movements of the user.
