Tetracode 1 is a monumental public art created for the Marguerite Valois-Maddocks collection in the city of Cowansville (Quebec, Canada). For his artistic intervention, Ernst Perdriel used an industrialized piece, a prefabricated concrete tetrapod molded by Béton Provincial in Matane (Quebec, Canada). The heavy piece (ten tons!) was installed on the final site, built by the city of Cowansville with a triangular concrete slab and lighting integrated into the slab. The concrete piece was then entirely covered with a mosaic of porcelain, glass, stone and other reclaimed objects. The materials and techniques used for the realization of the public artwork were chosen for their resistance to Quebec winters and for a minimum of maintenance. The patient mosaic work was carried out in situ by the artist for three consecutive months full time.
This abstract work offers a visual effect in gradient with the end of the legs in dark and the clear center. Variations in tones visually enlarge the center of the part and thin the tips. The work thus appears larger than reality. The circles at the end of the legs on the ground are covered with the three primary colors: red, yellow and blue. Fragments of mirrors cover the edges of the circles, the top and the bottom of the sculpture. The light concrete slab is reflected by the mirrors under the structure and this creates a levitating effect on sunny days. We can imagine that it is a spaceship that has landed in the park! When we observe the work closely, we can see the integration of a multitude of unusual objects such as a switch, a camera lens, characters, etc. This suggests a series of codes to crack to understand the meaning of the work, hence the name Tetracode for the title of the sculpture.
