As the most popular mall in Beijing, XIDAN Joy City has been operating for more than 10 years, and the current space is unable to meet the needs of the target population. The proprietor wants an overall transformation of the south area of the shopping mall, with an aim to enhance the overall style of the south area and fit the more high-end stationed brands, while ensuring the existing overall space is not affected.
Based on a full understanding of the proprietor’s needs, we decided to streamline the whole building with a more concise design language to express the large space. However, after being revamped on-site several times, the building’s structure is now very complex, making it impossible to apply the minimalist program to the whole ceiling on the second floor of the project. After the demolition, a huge complex structure of steel columns is exposed. Finally, we decided to respect the conditions of the site and the original structure and, by making good use of the tension and beauty of the structure, as well as the dynamic lines running up and down through the escalator, the original and rough beauty of the building is slowly extended from the first floor to the second floor. As a result, we turn the original challenge into a design highlight, merging the old and new spaces into one by showing full respect to the status of the original building as we had planned.
We chose marble, metal sheet and GRG as the main material, because we want to use common materials for their real texture. That is, specular metal and dumb surface stone, with coming together, will make a pleasant contrast; marble with large stripes and that of pure color produce a nice mix-and-match; and GRG is not used to make double curved surface but to accentuate the beauty of the arc.
