We enter the Diamond at the former Cinema of Paris hall at Place d'Youville. The new hall evokes the play of mirrors and endless reflections with the old by reflective black surfaces on the ceiling, walls and floor. Recycled glass display cases are transformed into a digital display.
After passing through a dark hall, we arrive at the heart of the building, in a luminous triangular void which rises the entire height of the space between the former YMCA and new auditorium. On one side, a large glass wall diagonally slices through the heritage building, revealing the three-storeyed interior, and on the other rises a raw concrete volume which houses the performance hall and studios. A monumental staircase, covered in plywood, climbs in the void like a tree towards the light.
We arrive in the piano nobile of the former YMCA where structures recycled from salvaged partitions, a new coffered ceiling, and an oak floor with walnut motifs evoke the phantom of rooms of a bygone era. Period brick load-bearing walls are rebuilt, with their arches, in poured concrete.
We cross the void by a footbridge to access the auditorium. We enter a large volume where facades in engraved wood and dyed black rise in front of lateral technical walkways, and emulate the molding of the former YMCA's facade.
