The Flight 93 National Memorial is a new 890-hectare national park in Western Pennsylvania, USA where United Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001. The designed memorial landscape commemorates the 40 heroes on Flight 93 who gave their lives thwarting a terrorist attack on the U.S. capital.
The restoration of the land and designed interventions create a unified, immersive experience attuning visitors to the hallowed ground and the qualities of the changing landscape. A wind chime tower, a 30-meter-tall musical instrument and artwork, marks the entrance to the memorial. An interpretive center occurs along the flight path where it crosses the tree-lined edge of the 48-hectare Field of Honor that forms a nationally scaled embrace of the final resting place of forty heroes. A memorial plaza allows visitors to walk along the crash site culminating in a crenellated wall with inscriptions of the forty. Nearly two decades in the making, the park has been guided by a master plan and implemented over several phases.
Commemoration and healing are at the heart of the project, in form – the qualities and physical features of the site are used for their expressive power and the design’s scale corresponds to the imprint of these events on the national conscience; experience – landscape and architectural interventions engage all the senses towards reflection; and ecological function – as the former open-pit coalmine is now a vibrant meadow, wetland, emerging grove and forest.
