GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Commercial Building / Retail, Health Clinic, Restaurant, Bar & Nightclub : Platinum Winner
The Distillerie Grand Dérangement, the first organic micro-distillery certified in Quebec, is located in St-Jacques, a municipality with a rich past that inspired its promoter as the Acadian cradle in Lanaudière region following the great deportation of 1755 – the Grand Dérangement.
The identity and concept of the DGD embraces the rebellious, non-conformist, irreverent and resilient attitude of the Acadians during this shocking event to develop an evocative, relevant and solidary architectural expression. The concept celebrates the past, present and future of New Acadia's rich history and land.
Composed of two buildings, the Distillerie Grand Dérangement includes a reception, tasting and boutique pavilion that recalls the typical Acadian house and the origin of the community. The apparent "imbalance" of the sloping volume evokes all the tension and insecurity of the historical event, while the second building, the distillation warehouse, is a simple shoebox building with a geometry that evokes determination, resilience and courage of this population in a modern and simple construction. Its southwestern flank bears a white imprint that echoes the volume of the "Little Acadian House", like a dialogue between the two buildings and echoing the history. The duality of black and white that dresses the buildings refers to the reverses of fortune and the moments of grace that marked the Acadian epic.
