LEACOCK SHARED STREET RENAISSANCE
The new Leacock Shared Street is one of the first phases of the master plan for the rehabilitation of McGill University's prestigious campus. Taking advantage of the works required to re-waterproof the concrete slab of the Leacock building below street level, the university must completely demolish the street located on this roof terrace. A project heralding a promising approach.
RETHINKING SPACE FOR PEDESTRIANS
The width of the roadway has been reduced by half. The cleared space along the building creates an outdoor lounge with rest, gathering and work spaces designed to be flexible and distinctive. Street furniture types are grouped in different arrangements to meet the varied needs of a diverse clientele. This also allowed the interior of the building to be extended to the exterior in a fluid and coherent gesture.
A SAFE PROJECT ADAPTED TO THE EXISTING
The project also faced two challenges: the first was to propose a layout adapted to pedestrians while allowing access for fire trucks and maintenance workers in particular to the underground building. The latter leads us to the second challenge, that of a development on an existing underground building. It was therefore necessary to take into account all aspects relating to the networks, the load, and the difference in level. This was a large-scale job that required the collaboration of all the project's stakeholders.
