The Sutherland Campus was established in 1973 within a park-like setting. Almost 50 years later, the college commissioned our firm to revitalize the 76,000 sf A-Wing. The challenge was to transform the dark and inefficient building to meet 21st century standards for learning and sustainability. The process began by shedding the building’s brown aluminum envelope back to its steel frame, recladding it with alpolic aluminum panels – a lightweight material conventionally found on gas stations that instantly gives the building a luminous appearance. To break down the A-Wing’s solidity, the architects re-crafted its form by applying some panels with accordion folds, and adding perforated versions over the windows. Arranging similarly coloured panels at varying angles captures natural light in different conditions, giving the illusion of a deeper colour palette. Replacing some existing walls with glazing, the design invites lights in and treats passerbys to glimpses of the learning within.
