The multidisciplinary renovation project of the Place des Arts Esplanade reaffirms the public aspect of this important gathering space in the heart of Montreal’s cultural district, the Quartier des spectacles. A significant urban component, it relates the city’s cultural history to the future vision for its city center. Redesigned as a part of the waterproofing system retrofit, the new Esplanade is reconfigured to enhance the quality of its environment, amplifying the monumentally of the place and adapting it to the needs of events which take place there. The physical connection between the Esplanade and its context is reinforced through careful planning of circulations and the construction of a new staircase on Sainte-Catherine Street, linking street-level to podium-level. Scenographic equipment imbedded in the paving and furniture allows for elegant implantation of activities that often animate the area. A visual corridor is preserved towards the mount Royal, a city landmark, creating a green axis in the west portion of the place and accentuating the presence of vegetation. On the east side, flowering trees enliven the space, reminiscent of flower planters hanging from Montreal balconies. Fountains and a water basin reflecting the surrounding heritage buildings compose an element of interest creating a relaxing oasis downtown. Iconic, the Esplanade de la Place des Arts is a sustainable development that showcases modern heritage architecture.
