Ubisoft is one of the world’s premiere gaming development companies, and their recent Winnipeg headquarters gave Design Shop an opportunity to develop a studio space reflective of the creativity and innovation that happens within their walls every day. Located in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District, the interior of the space amplifies the existing industrial character of the building, and refines the playful nature of Ubisoft’s business into an environment that allows the international company to develop their work in a way that is rooted in local context. Programmatically, the space promotes a work-life balance through the distribution of large, open workspaces intertwined with allocated spaces of reprieve. Each space reflects a unique concept tied together by rhythmic design details. By employing the use of multiple levels and writeable surfaces, the story of each space comes to life through the inhabitation of its users, who engage it in multiple forms of movement and leave behind traces of imagination and ideation.
