Nippon Light Metal Company, Ltd. is engaged in a wide and diverse range of aluminum-related businesses, from raw materials to plates and profiles to processed products. By incorporating the diversity of aluminum into the space, employees can rediscover the value of aluminum, become attached to the company, and strongly unite with it. The design of each area is based on symbols that extract the characteristics of aluminum, such as shapes associated with the aluminum manufacturing process.
In the office space for general employees, we proposed a design motif that would serve as a visual address for the free addressing system across multiple floors, and incorporated it into the interior design based on the symbol motif for each floor. The icon for the cafeteria floor, where everyone gathers, is a combination of the symbols for each office area, while the executive floor is a square shape that surrounds the employees. This "jointing" was inspired by "Kintsugi". Kintsugi is a restoration technique in which damaged parts of ceramics are glued together with lacquer and then decorated with metal powder. The idea was to connect each place and deepen the cooperation among employees. While different designers were working on the design for each area, the design motif was planned as a common concept for the entire project, as an important element to bring the overall design of the project together.
