GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Student
Categories : Student work / Student - Industrial Design / Product / Furniture : Platinum Winner
Using aluminum extrusions from the production of pedestrian bridges as the starting point, the idea was to reuse these off cuts and requalify their primary purpose. The material availability of aluminum combined with Quebec winter traditions help form the conceptual premise for this project. Well anchored in the collective memory of the province, these two narratives come together to create a unique and playful sled. The T profile, by its proportions and roundness, offers the optimal gliding surface. The side openings allow for a firm grip during the descent, and considerably reduce the weight of the object. Shaped using the milling machine and the band saw, the skates were hand-finished using rasps and sand paper. Everything is then firmly held together by a series of sugar maple dowels and custom-fitted inserts. A design which tends to divert the traditional use of an extruded beam towards an unexpected outcome. An exercise that seeks to highlight a must needed rapport between industrial transformation methods and the finesse of craftmanship.
