Garden City Shopping Centre

Having not been renovated since 1989, and with new retail centers popping up in the neighborhood, Garden City Shopping Centre was due for a makeover. Antiquated lighting, outdated finishes, a dark and somber food court, and randomly placed amenities were just a few of the elements that aged the mall.
One of the initial challenges we faced was working with a limited budget of $8 million. Although it was mostly a cosmetic renovation, we needed to be resourceful as the upgrades encompassed new w/c in the food court, renovating all of the entrances, as well as some HVAC updates.
Our approach was to develop a sleek, contemporary design that also played upon to the name ‘Garden’. This concept was successfully executed by introducing a variety of floral patterns, Canadian wood, and distinctive sitting areas. Additionally, with coffered ceilings of 20' x 20' x 40’, we made lighting a feature element by introducing round geometric shaped wooden pendants, in cluster-like combinations, in different sizes and finishes. These almost floral like organic forms are essential elements that contribute to the ‘Garden’ concept captured throughout the common areas.
The end result is a revitalized, warm and inviting space that better serves the needs of the local community and the success of the renovation was felt immediately with mall traffic increasing by 22%. The modernized design was also applied to the redeveloped 92,000 sq. ft. space formerly occupied by Sears.
