GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition
The owners of this century-old Eastern Townships farmhouse wished to enjoy the panoramic view of the rolling hills. In collaboration with Thellend Fortin architectes, they undertook the expansion and renovation of their home.
Grafted to the old building in the shape of a gallery, the extension follows a horizontal line that respects the structure’s original silhouette. The new volume features a series of adjoining rooms, each offering a view of the mountains.
Thellend Fortin architectes used the exterior wall covering as a unifying element; the new extension’s vertical cladding contrasts with the bleached wood horizontal slats that cover the original building.
Both structures preserve their unique identity while perfectly complementing each other. For the jury, this clever use of wood was the influencing factor; the wood was treated as a contemporary material with a story of its own.
The story can also be told through the home’s interior design. The covering material and the structure make one to create a seamless harmony between the rooms. The architects made careful and sensitive use of the wood texture to convey the spirit of the place and revive the Phénix, winner of the jury’s Coup de Cœur Award.
