GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition

Since fall 2012, the Discovery Centre of Parc national du Mont-Tremblant has a new look. The new structure offers a spectacular view of Lac Monroe and the mountains thanks to two glass panels and an outdoor amphitheater annexed to the Centre.

The project was to create an integrated design of the existing structure with minimal impact on the environment in addition to optimizing its performance, both ecologically and energetically. The firm Smith Vigeant architectes rose to the challenge in close collaboration with architect Martin Roy to find innovative bioclimatic strategies.

With an emphasis on wood, the building of 470 m2 was built, for the most part, with local species: eastern cedar for the exterior cladding; pine for the ceiling; and hemlock for the interior walls and the amphitheater covering.

The Centre is now heated and air conditioned by using a hydrothermal system. In addition, the architectural design was developed so that sunrays get through the building in winter and are reflected on the roof in summer. As a result, it show a decrease of 59% of its energy consumption – according to the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB) – and is receives the Sustainable Development Award.

Great credit is due to the artisans who united their talents and expertise to prove that ecological and aesthetic improvements can go hand in hand. “There is poetry and symbiosis in this eco-friendly project, said the jury. Not to mention the use of wood; each type was carefully chosen according to usage.”
