GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition
La SHED architecture is the 2013 recipient of the Stand Award 400 ft2 and under, for the stand design of l’Escalerie. The architects have excelled through an original concept that emphasizes the architectural function of the staircase manufacturer, as well as the company’s image newly oriented towards modern design.
Built in a space of 10 feet by 20 feet, the stand is made of two slightly offset staircases; one is open and suspended, while the other is full and anchored to the floor. Joined by a bridge, they seem to interlock. The created structure forms an inviting architectural pathway that allows visitors to experience the formal and visual qualities of each. Thanks to an ingenious minimalist language, the architects incorporated the functional aspects to the stand, by creating a place to gather and share under the suspended staircase, while concealing storage spaces behind an invisible door.
The jury underlines the innovative stand design, which blends aesthetics and functionality resulting in an astute presentation of the product. Furthermore, despite major constraints (the stand could not have anchorage to the ceiling or the floor), designers have come to produce a sculptural message truly reflective of l’Escalerie’s new image.
