The Royal Hotel, in the historic town of Picton, Prince Edward County (PEC), reimagines a landmark Victorian hotel property as the anchor of community life. After decades of neglect, a once grand hotel was completely transformed and brought back to life by Giannone Petricone Associates and ERA Architects with landscape architecture by Janet Rosenberg & Studio.
The Royal welcomes guests and the community to a unique experience that is deeply rooted in place and celebrates local artisans, drawing on food and wine grown within the County. The landscape stitches together the main hotel and the Annex auxiliary building, a former stable now home to a revolving art gallery and a pop-up retail space. Warm, natural materials like clay bricks, weathering steel and timber are used throughout a series of connected outdoor rooms, providing welcoming and comfortable spaces for dining, lounging, and swimming. Native plants and wildflowers fill custom planters and shift with the seasons.
The Royal has become a destination and economic activator in the community and has been featured widely in publications in Canada and the USA, including Condé Nast’s 2023 Hot List.
