The Centre communautaire multifonctionnel secteur Est in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures is a new meeting and gathering place with new, adapted, accessible, festive and contemplative facilities.
BC2’s professionals were tasked with drawing up a development concept, plans and specifications and overseeing the outdoor landscaping of this new intergenerational centre, using a participatory and collaborative approach. The complete reorganization of the outdoor site will create a unifying space starting from the central square that will extend towards various points of activity and contemplation. The platforms for events, leisure activities and transit paths are now clearer and more accessible, making it possible to meet the cultural, social and recreational needs of the population. This new multifunctional space is open to the public and boasts contemporary street furniture, ground patterns and textures that represent the site’s plant life, and a large central island of greenery.
The complete demineralization of the front car park and the renaturalization of a large part of the surface area allowed new layouts to be created, including a scenic, social and fitness area under an architectural canopy. Also added to this multi-generational space were pickleball courts (cleverly integrated to reduce ambient noise for residents), bocce courts, a free children’s play area with wooden furniture to stimulate the imagination, and eye-catching illuminated water jets for keeping cool in the summer.
With a view to preserving the existing ecosystems, the development preserved the mature trees of the neighboring woods, creating a variety of routes through the natural environment and paths to the more festive urban ambience at the heart of the site.
Special attention was paid to preserving and enhancing the existing mixed woodland, wild land and urban pine forest, which provide an important sense of identity and belonging within the community. The new meandering paths in a natural setting, including new furniture, invite residents to wander and use the site in all four seasons. Multidisciplinary collaboration led to creative and sustainable solutions for the reuse of excavated material to shape the site’s topography and create a break with private spaces and the urban character of the city. In addition, a sliding hill was created to enhance the winter activity offering.
The multifunctional centre is enhanced through a mix of activities and facilities for all, the prism of different landscapes and the town’s new cultural and gathering space. This multifaceted landscape has undergone a marvellous process of enhancement and appropriation by residents and visitors alike, making it a community space of choice where the concern for landscape and ambience is given pride of place.
