GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Residence / Residential Space ≤ 1,600 sq. ft. (≤ 150 sq.m.) : Gold Certification

Located in Outremont, Montreal, this townhouse had remained virtually unchanged since its construction in 2001. After several years of reflection, the owners felt it was time to reinvigorate their living environment.

The brief was to design the renovation of the residence’s first floor. The kitchen was to be redesigned to optimize circulation spaces, preparation areas and storage volumes. The entrance was to be redefined to accommodate a large wardrobe near the main door. The dining room and living room needed updating. All without knocking down any load-bearing walls, moving the existing mechanicals or touching the building envelope.

.

The project redefines the circulations and different alignments of the living area. By enlarging the kitchen, the staircase leading to the basement is now centered in the axis of a large wall-mounted mirror; an alignment that virtually enlarges the space at the confluence of circulations.

The architectural partiality takes its cue from the existing layout.

The architectural approach takes shape through the combination of three primary components: metal claustras, integrated furniture volumes and a sober color palette. Thus, the staircases are marked by architectural railings that extend from floor to ceiling. In the dining room, the claustra slats are echoed in the wall slats used to dress the partitions. In the kitchen and entrance hall, the space is organized by a succession of wood-effect furniture and taupe-colored furnishings.

V+R Renovation is the transformation of a row house into a bright, sober and refined home.
