Located in Old Rosemont, on the island of Montreal, the main unit of this 1950s plex deserved to be reconfigured to allow members of a young family with growing needs to remain in the neighborhood they love.
The mandate consisted in designing the internal reorganization of the building to allow the ground-floor unit to be enlarged from the inside, while preserving the accessory dwelling unit that had been occupied for decades. The objective was to add bedrooms and distribute them upstairs, away from the living areas. The work was also to include interior and exterior upgrades to the entire building.
The project takes advantage of the reorganization of internal circulations to orient the building towards its rear courtyard, which acts as a semi-public square for the neighborhood. As the courtyard is decompartmentalized and located close to a “T de ruelle”, it becomes as much a playground for children as a gathering space for parents.
On the first floor, several load-bearing walls were knocked down to bring living areas together on the alley side, where windows could be enlarged and balconies reconfigured.
On the street side, an entrance hall has been laid out in the style of a mud room that is both formal and open-plan, allowing natural light to penetrate the center of the residence.
The architectural approach takes shape through the combination of textures; natural light brings to life metal elements, integrated furniture blocks, glazed tile cladding and white oak and Brazilian slate floors.
The Rénovation B+D testifies to the versatility of the Montreal plex in being able to meet the contemporary needs of young families by offering housing that is at once urban, sober and warm.
