GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Public Building / Urban Building : Bronze Certification
On the occasion of its 350th anniversary, the City of Terrebonne commissioned Cardin Julien to design a new outdoor stage in the heart of Parc Philippe-Villeneuve. The design team’s objective was to create a space for performance and creativity, as well as a year-round gathering place. Implanted in a sports-oriented park near a low-density residential neighborhood, the stage imagined by Cardin Julien had to bridge several contextual elements.
.
With landscape architecture partner Projet Paysage, four connecting axes were created, addressing different users: those coming from the park, the library, the high school and the surrounding neighborhood. This new installation helps to structure, connect and enliven the park and its surroundings.
A four-season outdoor stage
One of the main inspirations for this project was that of the park pavilion, an open, welcoming space that invites people to gather and enjoy nature. This idea was merged with that of an outdoor stage, creating a hybrid structure that would serve as both a performance space and a community meeting point. Thinking about the pavilion and stage in parallel allowed us to explore the idea of a facility that is inhabited during all four seasons, at different times of day and by a multitude of users. The concept of the layout inspires a 360-degree open stage. Rather than an obstacle, we pass through an open, inviting structure. The generic rectangular shape was segmented to orient the stage towards the spectator zone and create strong alignments with the site’s circulation axes. The textured yet homogeneous aluminum cladding serves to highlight the angles created by the stage’s shape. In addition to creating a contrast with the wood inside the stage, the clear aluminum visually positions the new structure within its surroundings.
Given the variety of events for which the stage is intended, the emphasis had to be on its versatility and adaptability. Various elements were put in place: the installation of a lighting structure allowing for different configurations, the addition of modern equipment adapted to needs, and the use of durable materials optimal for the urban context and the elements. Thanks to a collaborative approach and attention to detail, this new stage has become much more than just a performance venue – it’s become a true gathering space in the heart of the city.
