GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition
Discipline : Interior Design
Categories : Residence / Kitchen : Gold Certification
My name is Audrey, and since 2006, I have been a professional interior designer of eco-friendly commercial and residential buildings at my company AUB&CO Intérieurs.
In my day-to-day work, I accompany my customers who wish to renovate and build in a truly eco-friendly way from start to finish.
I believe that’a house should be designed and built according to how we want to feel and live on a daily basis, not what we think it’should look like.
Every project is a love affair between people, their living space and the location. That’s why I’m proud to present this large-scale project, the fruit of an exceptional collaboration and two years of passionate commitment between my customers and myself.
This warm double kitchen is the result of an exceptional collaboration and two years of passionate commitment between my customers and myself.
This warm double kitchen is the result of an exceptional collaboration and two years of passionate commitment between my customers and myself.
This warm double kitchen, with its Mid-Century and Spanish origins, is located in the heart of the house in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec. It offers a sense of calm and well-being, and embodies the harmony between design and functionality, providing a sense of grounding and connecting us to the organic world. It spans 28 linear feet, with two imposing, unifying central islands.
The coherent marriage of design and functionality is a perfect example of this.
The coherent and ergonomic marriage of styles, textures, contrasting colorations and materials, between black, brown and white, fluted wood, the bold choice and installation of floor coverings and heavily veined white quartz, gives this kitchen a unique and refined personality. It is above all a symbol of raw strength, but at the same time a very comforting and deeply soothing whole.
Putting my customers at the center of each of their projects, I am absolutely concerned, as they are, with their comfort and well-being as well as that of their loved ones.
In each of my customers’ projects, I place circular and holistic design at the center of my approach. I value the principles of good and fair, advocating deconsumerism, revalorization, second-hand use and local purchasing. My focus is on enhancing the value of Quebec interiors and territory through the creation of quality spaces, all in an evolutionary and timeless way.
From the design to the execution of the project.
From conception to completion, it reveals a stability and serenity that, in this project, evokes not only a return to one’s roots, adventure and indulgence, but above all expresses protection, peace and loyalty. It calls for connection with the world and with others. It is rootedness, that which binds us to our family, our childhood, our memory and respect for ourselves, others and traditions.
Faced with the constraint of the space’s width, I opted for a more organic approach by integrating certain sections of the space in a rounded shape, offering an elegant transition between each of the distinct stations. An ingenious idea that won over my customers, who love proximity as much as tranquillity.
The café/lunch/bar/tapas section, incorporating the repositioning of an existing antique cabinet and bespoke design, is conceived as a nod to commercial cafés complementing this convivial space where the pleasures of gastronomy and moments of sharing come together.
This project is the result of an exciting collaboration between my translation of my clients’vision, the values of eco-responsible design and several team brainstorms between the clients and myself. The owners, themselves passionate about buying local, health, sustainability and circular, holistic design, were 100% involved and were at the heart of every decision.
I am delighted to share this achievement with you.
DID YOU KNOW:
■Two dishwashers are concealed behind cabinet panels, including one, in a drawer at the front of the secondary island, near the occasional sink.
■ The fridge and freezer are also camouflaged by cabinet panels.
■The arches and hood above the hob, were entirely handmade and lime-finished (as were all the walls too) by the customers.
■ All deconstruction, construction and completion of all finishing work, including, plumbing, lighting and installation of cabinetry boxes, was carried out entirely by the owners.
■ The hardwood floor was completely upgraded: uninstalled, sanded, trimmed, reinstalled plank by plank in paths and rafters and oiled to new.
■ The ceramics on the backsplash in the Café/lunch/bar/tapas section have been rescued from a totally unusual location. Can you find out where? On the floor of the main entrance, dating from the house’s original era, under plywood and other stacks of more recent ceramics. A find that has been painstakingly revalued and repositioned in a place that restores it to its full splendor.
My role as a designer is essential throughout the entire process of a renovation and green building project, whether it be for the layout and ergonomics of interior spaces, getting to the heart of the matter regarding the choice of healthy and sustainable materials, proposing strategies to make daily life enjoyable through the seasons and marrying current and future needs and desires.
I prioritize the importance of drawing inspiration from heritage and ancestral knowledge, where many buildings were then designed to endure for centuries and centuries. I also refer to the fact of adapting the building to human, environmental and geographic terrain factors, and I raise awareness of the pitfall of choosing synthetic and/or more entry-level or even trendy materials.
Through their projects,
their designers, architects and builders have made it a point of honour to take inspiration from the heritage and knowledge of their ancestors, where many buildings were designed to last for centuries and centuries.
Through their projects, I teach people to identify their true needs, to get back to basics, to become one with their environment, and therefore with themselves.
Here is a majestically harmonious, fascinating and 100% eco-responsible kitchen.
