The classicist appearance of the Hard Rock Hotel Budapest is given a contemporary touch by the 720 m2 special copper facade crowning the roof. The aim was to create a homogeneous front while providing an unobstructed view from inside. S39 Hybrid Design provided a smart design solution by creating capsule-shaped openings in the façade.
The development of this work – requiring a spirit of innovation and contemporary technology – was an exciting design task. It became a challenge by the fact that due to the pre-defined technical characteristics, the perforations in the surface had to be implemented with a given number of cutting points, using cuts of pre-determined lengths, thus these numbers had to be traced when designing and developing the form and size of the perforations, matching the rhythm of their position. Opportunities offered by 21st century technology provided a solution for this complex situation: the optimization of the development of the surface took place via parametric design. The designer work continued in close cooperation with the manufacturers, alongside continuous consultation that supported the manufacturing process. Thanks to the graphic sensitivity and level of technological preparedness of the designers, a facade came into being that is truly the crowning jewel of the hotel – just as the investor intended.
During production, moulds cut out of the metal sheets were regarded as waste, but from a design point of view they meant reusable materials: they function as partition design elements in the rooms. Thus, the project highlights one of the burning issues of our time: sustainability, recycling of building elements and coexistence of architecture and design.
While the facade cladding was created with parametric design, the partition was constructed thanks to our design team’s belief in the raison d’être of craftsmanship. This shows how the opportunities provided by high-tech technology and the traditional experience of craftsmanship complement each other well even today.
The multi-awarded building is definitely a trend-setter in the Hungarian market from a sustainability point of view, raising the question of the use of waste.
Hard Rock Hotel Budapest has been enriched with unique architectural-design elements with additional appeal, increasing the architectural value of the building, becoming attractive elements of the hotel.
