The Saint-André no3 project consists of the conversion of a duplex into a cottage with a backyard extension and the addition of a mezzanine. Located on Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal, the concept for this single-family residence was developed around a simple spatial organization of served and serviced spaces, which are arranged in parallel.
The geometric interplay of the extension’s rear facade fits into the virtual grid of the elevation of the neighboring building designed by the same architects and for the same family a decade earlier. This correspondence creates a dialogue, a play of sliding openings that shapes a united and coherent whole.
The project’s color palette was developed in shades of white and light wood, white oak. The architects’ intention was to create an ethereal, bright environment to balance the narrowness of the space. Depending on the time of day, natural light brings the monochrome textures and natural materials to life.
The staircase was designed as a free element that folds and unfolds in the space according to a grid linking the different landings. Its raw material, in contrast with the soft colors of its surroundings, highlights it and accentuates its presence.
Its composition was planned to embellish a promenade winding through the various levels of the residence, from the basement to the mezzanine. At the top, a series of skylights provides all the spaces with natural light.
