The Universal Mobile Clinic, UMC model #1.6, is a specialised vehicle upfitted to form part of a wide initiative to bring health care to people who may not normally have access to the kind of health care services they need. This includes primary health care and social services for marginalized, homeless or rural populations, as well as harm reduction services for people experiencing substance abuse. Since 2013, thirty UMC’s designed and built in Quebec are currently in production or on the road throughout Canada.
The UMC is an economical, efficient and versatile mobile primary health care clinic consisting of a modular “kit of parts” installed in an affordable, maneuverable and modestly-sized vehicle upfitted to provide a wide range of healthcare services. Comprised of two rooms that can be used in parallel — the first serving as a consultation space and the second serving for examination and treatment — the UMC is staffed by three heath care professionals. All UMC components are designed and built to be highly durable and cleanable, primarily from powder coated aluminum and stainless-steel panels. Services and equipment are tucked into or below built-ins, and provide medical equipment, materials, power, hot and cold water, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning in an autonomous unit that can be driven to those most in need.
Measuring a modest 8 m2, the architect-designed UMC is having a huge, positive impact in the communities they serve, by facilitating the humanitarian work done by a rapidly growing list of organizations from across Canada.
