At 52 Yongfu Road, Shanghai, “Way Home” is an exhibition by the storestories Museum that brings together 13 artists and their works from more than 10 countries in China, Europe and the Americas. The work, curated by Xu Chengxi, is presented in the form of textiles, sound art, video recording, visual music and other multimedia forms, and at the same time constructs a dialogue with the weaving tradition and lifestyle of the southwest ethnic minority areas in China.
BAM interpreted “Way Home’ as a pathway of invitation. The home described is earthly, it is from the other side of the world but it resonates with all of us. In spirit of the show, BAM focused the design approach on tying together the artists and their works with the flamboyant building, bringing them home, and making the homecoming feel fresh.
The site of the show is as a Spanish style mansion for an American financier in the Former French Concession designed by Elliott Hazzard and built in 1932. As with so many ideas today this site is mixing pot of cultural elements which in their totality create something unmistakably Shanghainese. Yet when adding the ‘imported’ cultural elements the home becomes a more global platform.
The design interventions were simple yet thoughtful, carefully balancing the art with the site. The design team collaborated with the artist Gaston Ugalde to dress up the facade with Bolivian fabrics, rolled out the striped carpet, and added flowers and cacti outdoors.
