GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Public Building / Sports & Leisure Building : Bronze Certification
Categories : Special Award / Architecture + Wood
The new aquatic facilities at Sir-George-Étienne-Cartier Square, located in the borough of Le Sud-Ouest in Montreal, have taken over from those that had served this magnificent, century-old green space since 1960. The bathers’ pavilion and the outdoor pool, which had reached the end of their useful life, were thus entirely demolished to be replaced by modern facilities including a pool with a beach and a gradual descent as well as a wading pool.
The new bathers’ pavilion, a distinctive architectural gesture, transparent and full of light, undulates like a wave between the majestic trees of the park. It was built with a structure made of heavy timber and its filtration room meets current filtration standards.
The entire work was carried out in accordance with the City of Montreal’s Sustainable Development Policy for Buildings with respect to the management of construction waste and the choice of materials and/or equipment, while contributing to the reduction of heat islands in urban areas.
Particularities
- Complete demolition and disposal of concrete infrastructures containing asbestos and lead (pavilion, pool and beach)
- Sensitive and successful architectural integration in an exceptional natural environment, located in the center of a century-old square displaying several buildings with heritage character.
- Design of gender-neutral locker rooms, entirely open to the outdoors.
Challenges and innovations
- Use and enhancement of wood for the building structure.
- Complete demolition of a building where all exterior walls were filled with asbestos, while avoiding the dissemination of dust to the surrounding residential environment.
- The deck gradually descends into the pool at one end to promote water acclimation for children.
