Allez Up does not go unnoticed at the corner of De L’Église Street and Boulevard Lasalle. For passers-by, large storefront windows showcase the striking atmosphere of the climbing gym inside, animated by its dynamic and friendly community.
Finding a suitable space for a climbing gym was not an easy one. The chosen space, initially intended for commercial businesses, is located on the ground level of the Origine condominium building. The first challenge was to imagine a bouldering gym in a commercial space composed of several varied spaces in a staggered arrangement. In collaboration with the climbing wall specialist Délire, great care was given to the layout of the climbing walls to create a heterogeneous ensemble. The climbing walls continue from one area to another punctuated by relaxation areas framing spectacular views. This exchange between climbing walls and relaxation areas allows a surprising richness of space that users can discover gradually.
From the onset, the objective was to create a gathering place in the lively district of Verdun that is much more than a training centre. The heart of the project, consisting of the coffee counter, along with the strategically located benches and relaxation zones, has become a meeting catalyst for new encounters. A long counter extends from the entrance into the main training space in a “L” shape, creating a boundary between the staff offices and the public space, the counter starts off as a reception desk and becomes a coffee counter around the corner.
The climbing walls, finished with russian plywood, were decisive for the materiality of the project. The boutique, located in the corridor near the entrance, is composed of a plywood backing with shelves and an integrated bench energizing this transitional space. A series of plywood cubbies of varying sizes create areas for rest and contemplation. The counter, another call back to the climbing walls, is finished with lacquered cherry wood slats; the whole is brought together by subdued neutral lighting evoking the friendly and welcoming atmosphere created by its occupants.
