A unique concept around the outdoor classroom
Located in La Malbaie, Du Plateau High School features a design concept that is both strong and subtle. Organic forms and paving stones emphasize the entire identity of the project. The concept puts the outdoor classroom at the heart of all the reflections to create a living space, while radiating towards the center of the building. The organization of pedestrian and vehicular circulation was thought out and designed by the landscape architect to ensure the safety of users, and to propose an inviting design featuring nature.
The inviting outdoor classroom in all seasons
The courtyard hosts an outdoor dining space that becomes an extension of the glass-enclosed cafeteria. A variety of furniture is installed here to linger alone or with others. The space is easily appropriated by everyone according to the different times of the day. The courtyard, which can be used throughout the academic year, includes a courtyard under which tables and benches have been installed. This space invites people to gather while remaining sheltered from bad weather. It constitutes a landmark in the landscape, a visual punctuation, a stopping point in the course. The landscape architect was also keen to involve the school’s students by using a work they created: colorful boards under the theme of diversity, a way of expressing a strong message by bringing a unique touch to the project’s design.
Floor coverings in harmony with the school’s architecture
The landscape architect proposes a design that fits in with the architecture of the newly renovated building. The design on the ground comes from the desire to trace the different entrances students use to get to the main door. There are several paths that form a radius marking the space and simulating the look. The landscape architect combined paving stones in different tones with poured concrete. This feature provides a unique ground pattern while optimizing wayfinding for students and faculty. The choice of color for the pavers also provides a playful look and is reminiscent of the building’s façade. It feels like one blends into the other.
Fun, versatile furniture and custom lighting
The outdoor furniture was carefully chosen to match the school. Benches, low tables alone or grouped together encourage interaction between users. Some benches also act as a table, do singular form specific to the project depending on the orientation of the seat. A bamboo forest module attracts our attention by bringing a very playful aspect while maintaining a modern character. All the furniture installed encourages exchanges and gatherings during or outside of class. Lighting also plays a big role, whether it is decorative or utilitarian. Chosen by the landscape architect, it blends perfectly with the clean, modern character of the project.
