Inspired by design elements found in locker rooms, the employee area of the Decathlon store in Sainte-Foy was completely renovated with affordable materials typically used in the construction and backstage areas of department stores. Tables, benches and a counter were made from varnished OSB panels, the material used to construct crates for sporting goods. These engineered panels are strong, versatile, fully recyclable and inexpensive. Recognizing the interest in their aesthetic, we made them a central element in the design of the employee space. The raw, imperfect look of OSB juxtaposed with the saturated orange and blue of the famous brand creates an unexpected contrast, full of sporting symbolism.
Beautiful in their simplicity, white grid panels overlay the blue walls in place of traditional ceramic. These standard structures, available in hardware stores, create a graphic, impressive statement reminiscent of mosaics in pool locker rooms. This is a nod to Decathlon’s use of this material as display units in all their stores. Both aesthetically pleasing and functional, the brackets also serve as notice boards for employees and to frame custom-made, wall-mounted light fixtures.
The space is used seven days a week by 85 employees – all of whom are athletes or sports enthusiasts. White vinyl floor markings form racing lanes and mark out a recreation area that’s essential to the Decathlon community life. Laid on top of the original concrete, this miniature running track is a space for pool tournaments, table tennis and group sports viewing.
Moulded plastic furniture in the Decathlon colours is reminiscent of French swimming pools and beaches. This project was completed in a short period of time on a very limited budget.
