The English Garden is one of our pioneering projects in the post-COVID reflection on the offices of the future: Solicited by Ivanhoé Cambridge and Index-Design, we were invited to study the impact of new needs and lifestyles generated by teleworking in downtown offices.
We reinterpreted the English garden. Unlike French gardens, which are highly organized, English gardens are defined by winding paths that open onto “picturesque” viewpoints – places where a painter would like to set up their easel, and where today’s employees would be an integral part of the painting.
Thus, our intervention not only stimulates comfort and well-being, but also values culture, different modes of work, and places humans at the center of the composition, whether they choose to be active or contemplative. The meandering path encourages “active meetings” and provokes spontaneity and human contact.
The ‘English Garden’ series is a set of flower pots, lanterns, and iconic carpets created specifically for the project, and it is divided into 4 distinct subspaces:
L’Orée (the Edge)
‘’L’Orée’’ starts the journey. Inviting relaxation, the space is darker, and its carpet is a basin that reflects the branches of trees and the blue of the buildings. Nature has already started to contaminate it.
‘’L’Habitat’’
This area and its carpet have an earthy feel, to embody the theme of English countryside and small animal burrows.
‘’La Fabrique de jardins’’ ( the garden factory)
An isolated place, where one goes in secret, the Garden Factory is a reference to a building overlooking a pond: the liquid expression is very present.
‘’Le Belvedere’’
More transparent, the Belvedere offers a prime spot for meetings. The circular table, designed by our firm, offers a spectacular view of PVM.
The Carpets:
We have created 3 signature carpets that evoke English gardens. Named after their respective zone, they create the narrative of the project. Like a painter’s viewpoint, they highlight elements of nature; the pond, tree branches touching the water, or the illusion of a precipice. They sculpt the space and define each moment of pause. Each carpet-artwork was thought, designed, and prepared for production by our illustration department, and then manufactured by Mohawk Group/Durkan. Their diameter ranges from 108 to 144 inches.
The Totem Pots:
Consisting of a series of interchangeable pedestals and pots of various shapes and colors, these unique pieces can be combined to create small groves, depending on the required modulation of the space. To do this, we created wooden molds for the fabrication of the metal-pressed pedestals and pots.
Finish: powder-coated with a stoneware finish
Material: 0.08″ metal-pressed
Manufacturer: Design Allstudio Inc.
La Fabrique de Jardin (Kiosk) :
Made up of perforated metal panels, the garden factory creates the central point of the walk. Its occupants, almost hidden when inside, have the ability to see the movements outside, without being disturbed in their peace. The garden factory plays on the lexical field of the cabin lost by the lake. They are barely perceptible, through a round window that overlooks the exterior view. Approximately 10 feet wide, it allows comfortable seating for two or three people.
