The Côte-Sainte-Catherine House project consists of the renovation of a two-story single-family residence located on Chemin de la Cote Sainte-Catherine in Outremont. The family wanted to open up the living spaces on the ground floor in order to introduce a maximum of natural light into the heart of the house. Upstairs, the project also involved renovating the two bathrooms and creating a master closet.
The common areas were really dark. Only a neglected three-season sunroom behind the residence was bathed in light. Borgne Rizk Architecture decided to relocate the kitchen to the solarium to regain an abundance of light. This idea suggested a lot of technical issues to solve, but an opportunity to redefine the use of this residual room. Obviously, the result of this move was worth all the stakes.
As an opening to light, the window essentially symbolizes receptivity. The owners have appropriated the edge of the glass multiplying plants, herbs and hydroponic shoots right next to the fenestration creating, thus, a micro-garden. This glass wall offers, in summer, the contemplation of a mass of greenery perceptible from the common areas. The doors of the surrounding rooms were designed in glass to allow the inhabitants to cohabit in a poetic way with nature, where plants jostle for the sun. The symbolic sense of light was born from the contemplation of nature, and is concretized in the house of Cote sainte Catherine by the multiplication of windows and glass doors, where the light takes all its meaning.
