Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal
By : Lemay
GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Public Building / Urban Building : Gold Certification
With impactful design strategies, Lemay’s creation of a contemporary yet respectful architectural identity enhances Saint Joseph’s Oratory of cultural and religious significance. By embedding the bell tower’s carillon as an insertion in the landscape, an architectural and musical instrument is created, the sound of its 61 bells shaping an inspiring ascension and democratizing the religious experience. The intervention is framed by the architecture of the Oratory itself, in dialogue with the mountain’s topography and morphology, forming a welcoming place of tranquility, luminosity and warmth on a site of immense cultural and heritage significance for the city.
This project accomplishes a vision to enhance pilgrims’ access and services at the heart of the city with a new urban icon and acoustical journey. A new public square, redefined carillon and sacred garden emerge to form pavilions of terraces, parklets and green roofs. The gabion walls are made of stones excavated from the site, in the spirit of reuse. An ascent of the site honours the Oratory’s nature and unfolds indoors to striking combinations of wood and natural light. Its renewed identity integrates with the site to create a place that is beautiful, reverent, and monumental all at once.
