GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition
Discipline : Interior Design
Categories : Other categories in interior design / Concept in interior design : Silver Certification
As soon as one enters this multi-residential rental building, an oversized white oak bookcase greets them, evoking the warmth of a home. Rather than a horizontal build, the vertical construction of the woodwork was chosen as an answer to the scale of the hall; the texture generated spawns the beginnings of vertical lattice made of wood and metal, which will accompany the residents and visitors throughout.
The common areas are enhanced by furniture with light and bold geometries, anchored in a neutral palette of sage green, greys, black, chambray blue and peach. The strong axes of the composition are strengthened by linear lighting and suspended spotlights punctuate the grid. The colour scheme and lighting strategies are thought of like Ariadne’s thread, slinking from one space to another, ensuring the cohesiveness while offering diversified atmospheres.
A camaïeu of dark tones mark the backgrounds in order to further divide the spaces and participates in the volumetric division of the spaces, forcing a reading of the negative spaces in order to stage the panoramic views towards the outside and towards the main components of the layout.
The selected furniture varies the types of seating, some offering more formal posture and some a more relaxed one. Clustered in small islands, they encourage smaller gatherings withing these vast common spaces. The shared kitchen is designed with an volumetric and monumental approach, taking from the axes of the library and marking the first threshold encountered in the project. Compartments in the library will be available for use by the residents to allow for self-service book exchange. During the day, the common room is developed to allow for remote working with its booths, multimedia meeting rooms and connected workstations. By night, it is easy to imagine the lights dimming, some friends around the kitchen island hosting a wine tasting, and neighbours sitting around watching a sports game. The acoustics of the space were developed to support a wide range of daytime and nighttime activities, for individuals, small groups and community use.
As for the units themselves, they offer neutral and bright palettes, some with and some without contrast, to accommodate the wishes of the residents. The cabinetry is developed with functionality in mind.
The Square Seto project, developed by Capital Square, is located in Gatineau in the Aylmer sector. The architecture was designed by TLA and blanchette archi.design was mandated for the interior design of the common spaces and units.
