Le projet de restauration a \u00e9t\u00e9 entrepris dans le but d\u2019assurer sa p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 en revisitant certaines d\u00e9cisions qui semblaient moins bien document\u00e9es. <\/p>\n<p>Les principaux d\u00e9fis rencontr\u00e9s durant l\u2019\u00e9tape d\u2019analyse ont \u00e9t\u00e9 de synth\u00e9tiser la quantit\u00e9 colossale d\u2019informations pr\u00e9sentes dans les divers rapports, \u00e9tudes, expertises et recommandations existantes sur le b\u00e2timent. Parall\u00e8lement, malgr\u00e9 une documentation soutenue de l\u2019\u00e9volution du b\u00e2timent par Louis-Joseph Papineau et ses descendants, tr\u00e8s peu d\u2019information est disponible sur les transformations effectu\u00e9es par les propri\u00e9taires qui ont succ\u00e9d\u00e9 apr\u00e8s la vente de la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 par la famille Papineau en 1929. <\/p>\n<p>D\u2019autres d\u00e9fis, communs aux projets r\u00e9alis\u00e9s dans un contexte patrimonial, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 rencontr\u00e9s au cours des travaux, notamment l\u2019assemblage de certaines parties de l\u2019enveloppe qui n\u2019\u00e9taient pas document\u00e9es. Entre autres, la toiture \u00e0 baguettes en fonte de la tour de la biblioth\u00e8que, les couches superpos\u00e9es de plusieurs toitures au terrasson et la pose d\u2019un enduit sur briques aux murs du salon, pour en nommer que quelques-unes.  <\/p>\n<p>Ainsi, la recherche iconographique et les curetages et sondages s\u00e9lectifs auront permis de consolider un ensemble de d\u00e9cisions modifiant et rectifiant l\u2019image alt\u00e9r\u00e9e du Manoir, \u00e0 savoir :<br \/>\n&#8211; Le remplacement de la couverture en tuile synth\u00e9tique d&#39;amiante par une couverture en carreaux d\u2019ardoises, de trois couleurs distinctes et inscrites des initiales de Louis-Joseph Papineau ;<br \/>\n&#8211; La modification des couvertures m\u00e9talliques en s\u00e9lectionnant un mat\u00e9riau et une mise en \u0153uvre conforme \u00e0 sa mod\u00e9nature au tournant des ann\u00e9es 1900 ;<br \/>\n&#8211; Les recherches in situ par grattage des endroits anciens ont \u00e9galement permis de revenir \u00e0 la couleur originelle du temps de Papineau dans sa mise en \u0153uvre ;<br \/>\n&#8211; Le r\u00e9tablissement dans sa forme originelle du garde-corps du terrasson.  <\/p>\n<p>Le projet de restauration a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 selon une d\u00e9marche exemplaire qui int\u00e8gre une connaissance approfondie des ressources, tant historiques, culturelles que mat\u00e9rielles, afin que chaque aspect du projet soit bien document\u00e9 et ex\u00e9cut\u00e9. L\u2019importance de la qualit\u00e9 architecturale a \u00e9t\u00e9 soulign\u00e9e tout au long du projet de conservation par le choix des diff\u00e9rentes approches de restauration soulignant le souci du d\u00e9tail et des mises en \u0153uvre embrassant la tradition et les r\u00e8gles de l\u2019art dans la fa\u00e7on de faire.  <\/p>\n<p>Les travaux eux-m\u00eames ont \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019occasion de faire des d\u00e9couvertes d\u2019une grande valeur patrimoniale. Par exemple, une \u00e9tude chromatique sur l\u2019oriflamme de la tour carr\u00e9e a permis de d\u00e9terminer qu\u2019elle portait autrefois les couleurs associ\u00e9es au drapeau des patriotes. Cela a permis de r\u00e9tablir un \u00e9l\u00e9ment significatif et de montrer le souci du d\u00e9tail que portait Papineau \u00e0 son Manoir.  <\/p>\n<p>La restauration du Manoir-Papineau pr\u00e9sente un exemple de pr\u00e9servation du patrimoine et du paysage culturel ancien. Cette architecture continuera de fa\u00e7onner le paysage comme elle le fait d\u00e9j\u00e0 depuis plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations. <\/p>\n","en":"<p>This national historic site of Canada is a reminder of the importance of Louis-Joseph Papineau, lord of the Petite Nation, and of his work as the designer and builder of the Montebello estate. The Manoir and its outbuildings are a unique heritage site in Quebec and Canada. They represent a priceless legacy that reflects Papineau&#39;s culture, tastes, sensibility and even his ideas about the society of his time. The restoration project was undertaken with the objective to ensure its sustainability by revisiting certain decisions that seemed less well documented.  <\/p>\n<p>The main challenges encountered during the analysis stage were to synthesize the colossal amount of information present in the various reports, studies, expert opinions, and existing recommendations on the building. At the same time, despite the sustained documentation of the evolution of the building by Louis-Joseph Papineau and his descendants, very little information is available on the transformations carried out by the successive owners after the sale of the property by the Papineau family in 1929.  <\/p>\n<p>Other challenges common to projects carried out in a heritage context were encountered during the work, including the assembly of certain parts of the envelope that were not documented. These included the cast-iron batten roof on the library tower, the layering of several roofs on the terrace, and the application of brick plaster on the walls of the living room, to name a few.  <\/p>\n<p>As a result, the iconographic research and the selective curetage and surveys will have allowed to consolidate a set of decisions modifying and rectifying the altered image of the Manoir, namely:<br \/>\n&#8211; The replacement of the synthetic asbestos tile roofing with a slate tile roof, in three distinct colors and inscribed with the initials of Louis-Joseph Papineau;<br \/>\n&#8211; The modification of the metal roofs by selecting a material and an implementation in conformity with its modenature at the turn of the 1900s;<br \/>\n&#8211; The in situ research by scraping the old places also made it possible to return to the original color of Papineau&#39;s time in its implementation;<br \/>\n&#8211; The restoration of the railing of the terrace to its original form.  <\/p>\n<p>The restoration project was carried out in an exemplary manner that incorporates a thorough knowledge of the resources, both historical, cultural, and material, so that every aspect of the project is well documented and executed. The importance of architectural quality was emphasized throughout the conservation project by the choice of different restoration approaches highlighting attention to detail and implementations embracing tradition and the highest standards of craftsmanship in the process.  <\/p>\n<p>The work itself was an opportunity to make discoveries of great heritage value. For example, a chromatic study of the square tower&#39;s banner determined that it once carried the colors associated with the patriot flag. This allowed the restoration of a significant element and showed the attention to detail that Papineau brought to his Manoir.  <\/p>\n<p>The restoration of the Manoir-Papineau presents an example of heritage preservation and the ancient cultural landscape.
