De plus, la trame du granit ainsi que les pleins et les vides cr\u00e9\u00e9s par les loggias apportent une texture distinctive au rev\u00eatement qui contraste avec les tours de verre des alentours.<br \/>\nLa pr\u00e9servation des fa\u00e7ades historiques du nord et de l\u2019est, n\u00e9cessitant un empi\u00e8tement sur l\u2019emprise publique pendant les travaux, est devenue l\u2019un des principaux enjeux de ce projet, surtout lors de l\u2019excavation de 3 nouveaux niveaux de stationnement souterrain.<br \/>\nUne attention particuli\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 accord\u00e9e \u00e0 la perception de la tour \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle du passant. Le concept permet de conserver la perspective des fa\u00e7ades historiques restaur\u00e9es du club sportif au niveau de la rue. L\u2019intervention contemporaine dans le retrait entre les volumes datant de 1905 et 1933 met en lumi\u00e8re cette composante cl\u00e9 du b\u00e2timent d\u2019origine. Cela marque par la m\u00eame occasion la pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019entr\u00e9e de la nouvelle fonction r\u00e9sidentielle. Le maintien de la fonctionnalit\u00e9 des acc\u00e8s existants est un autre choix architectural permettant d\u2019int\u00e9grer pleinement la fa\u00e7ade existante au b\u00e2timent projet\u00e9.<br \/>\nAfin de bien int\u00e9grer le projet de la tour r\u00e9sidentielle au club sportif MAA, un silence a \u00e9t\u00e9 ins\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 la jonction du toit du b\u00e2timent patrimonial et de la nouvelle tour, par l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire d\u2019un \u00e9tage en recul d\u2019une mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 diff\u00e9rente. En plus de permettre une meilleure lecture de l\u2019ancien et du nouveau, ce silence permet de bien mettre en valeur le volume du b\u00e2timent d\u2019origine.<br \/>\nLe point de d\u00e9part de la mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 de la tour a \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 par les rev\u00eatements du b\u00e2timent existant de m\u00eame que par la qualit\u00e9, la durabilit\u00e9 et la richesse des mat\u00e9riaux typiques au quartier. C\u2019est pourquoi de la brique rouge, du granit Stanstead, et des accents m\u00e9talliques dor\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 int\u00e9gr\u00e9s au langage de la nouvelle tour, ouvrant un dialogue avec \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance classique du b\u00e2timent historique.<\/p>\n","en":"<p>The Montreal Athletics Association (MAA) sports club is an institution that has survived over a century and has witnessed the evolution of Montreal. Founded in 1881 and rooted in its clubhouse since 1905, it is a symbol of sports activities and acted as a gathering place for the residents of the prestigious Golden Square Mile neighborhood.<br \/>\nIn order to maintain the building and continue to offer services to its members, the institution partnered with a developer to bring the club into the 21st century as well as to welcome new residents to the neighborhood. The project consisted in the renovation of the sports club as well as the addition of a 32-storey tower above the existing heritage facades. The major interior renovations of the 1970s and 1990s removed any remaining trace of its original state so the team came to the decision to preserve two historic facades during construction. The preservation of the north and east historic facades, requiring encroachment on public right-of-way during construction, became one of the major stake of this project, especially during the excavation of 3 new underground parking levels.<\/p>\n<p>The architectural concept therefore adopted a tripartite composition, where one can clearly read the base which was the existing building itself, the body and the crown. The inspiration comes from the period in which the original building was constructed and the tower is designed in a revisited classical style.<\/p>\n<p>The brightness of the stone and the precision of its geometrical grid create a balance between history and modernity echoing to what the Golden Square Mile aimed to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Careful thought was given to its integration in its surrounding context.\u202fFirst, the slim profile of the tower allows it to blend well into its neighborhood and the stone grid as well as the solids and voids created by the loggias bring an interesting texture to the cladding in contrast to the glass towers nearby. Also, the tower was set back from the existing building facades on all sides to avoid the nave effect, to promote the penetration of light on all sides and above all to minimize the impact of the construction on its neighbors. Particular attention was given to the perception of the tower from the pedestrian scale. The result is that the pedestrian\u2019s perspective of the historic facades has not changed and the original streetscape and view of the sports club is maintained.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the materials found on site or throughout the Golden Square Mile but also by the elements of the original building, red brick, grey Stanstead stone, black metal for windows and champagne colored metal accents have been integrated into the language of the new tower, continuing the richness and classic elegance of the historic building.<\/p>\n<p>In order to integrate the original MAA clubhouse into the project, a silence was created at the junction of roof level of the original building with the new tower with a fully-glazed storey, highlighting the volume of the existing building.
