Ces parois de bois et de verre textur\u00e9, avec des portions battantes, permettent de dissimuler rapidement le fouillis quotidien du travail lorsque de la visite arrive. Like typical garden city houses of that time it was very partitioned and dark. The family who loves to entertain contacted Hum\u00e0 Design + Architecture to reorganize the ground floor while preserving its original character. The mandate was divided into two areas: the main entrance and the living area. It was essential to revise the front veranda to create a proper main entrance separated from the office area while trying to fit a wardrobe. The kitchen and dining room area had to be reorganized to make the space feel larger and brighter.<br \/>\nSeveral layout options were considered, some of which included an extension, but it was ultimately a space optimization exercise that was chosen. The solution was to reposition the access to the basement under the stairs and to eliminate the secondary entrance and its small veranda to convert them into space for the kitchen. The entire area of the staircase hall, kitchen and dining room has been reconfigured. It was very important for the clients not to denature the house: creating a big open space throughout the whole floor was not a solution. A large useful wall crossing the house divides the space. Several functions have been integrated into it: the entrance wardrobe and broom cupboard on the hall side and the built-in refrigerator and oven area on the kitchen side. The layout of the kitchen is unconventional as space is limited. At its heart sits a large island worked in oak veneer color matched to the original moldings of the house. It faces the dining room and allows our clients to interact with their guests. The island is highlighted by a large linear volume in black stained wood with its custom-made round handles. It includes both the pantry and the hidden breakfast nook. Slightly set back, in the old secondary entrance, is the cleaning area with its deep counter and large corner window opening onto the backyard. The interventions are treated with finesse such as the walls covered with woodwork that accentuate the character and the new marble landing which restores nobility to the original staircase. The use of curves in several places softens the space, especially for the counter of the island, which frees up the space while the circulation areas are sometimes reduced.<br \/>\nAs for the front veranda, it was necessary to give more presence to the main entrance. For the layout the idea was to create two office areas on either side of the entrance by creating room dividers. These panels of wood and textured glass with foldable portions make it possible to quickly conceal the daily clutter of work: everything looks good when the visit arrives! Built-in furniture was developed to create the two desks, a filing cabinet and an entrance bench. The family who loves to entertain contacted us to reorganize the ground floor while preserving its original character. The mandate was divided into two areas: the main entrance and the living area. It was essential to revise the front veranda to create a proper main entrance separated from the office area while trying to fit a wardrobe. The kitchen and dining room area had to be reorganized to make the space feel larger and brighter. The insulation, windows and heating systems also needed to be reviewed to make the house more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>Several layout options were considered, some of which included an extension, but it was ultimately a space optimization exercise that was chosen. The solution was to reposition the access to the basement under the stairs and to eliminate the secondary entrance and its small veranda to convert them into space for the kitchen. The entire area of the staircase hall, kitchen and dining room has been reconfigured. It was very important for the clients not to denature the house: creating a big open space throughout the whole floor was not a solution. A large useful wall crossing the house divides the space. Several functions have been integrated into it: the entrance wardrobe on the hall side and the built-in refrigerator and oven area on the kitchen side. The layout of the kitchen is unconventional as space is limited. At its heart sits a large island worked in oak veneer color matched to the original moldings of the house. It faces the dining room and allows our clients to interact with their guests. The island is highlighted by a large linear volume in black stained wood with its custom-made round handles. Slightly set back, in the old secondary entrance, is the cleaning area with its deep counter and large corner window opening onto the backyard. The interventions are treated with finesse such as the walls covered with woodwork that accentuate the character and the new marble landing which restores nobility to the original staircase. The use of curves in several places softens the space, especially for the counter of the island, which frees up the space while the circulation areas are sometimes reduced.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the environment, attention to detail has been brought to the project in order to preserve and recover many elements, in particular the doors and the original moldings. The entire floor was leveled, a radiant heating system was added and the challenge was to find an engineered wood floor that would have the same width as the original, i.e. 1\u00bd\u201d. Il fallait donc revoir la v\u00e9randa \u00e0 l\u2019avant pour cr\u00e9er une entr\u00e9e principale plus d\u00e9finie, distincte de la zone de bureau et voir la possibilit\u00e9 de construire une garde-robe d\u2019entr\u00e9e. Il \u00e9tait aussi essentiel de r\u00e9am\u00e9nager la cuisine et la salle \u00e0 manger et rendre l\u2019espace plus vaste et plus lumineux.<br \/>\nPlusieurs options d\u2019am\u00e9nagement ont \u00e9t\u00e9 envisag\u00e9es, dont certaines comprenant un agrandissement, mais c\u2019est finalement un exercice d\u2019optimisation d\u2019espace qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 retenu. L\u2019astuce a \u00e9t\u00e9 de repositionner l\u2019acc\u00e8s au sous-sol sous l\u2019escalier et d\u2019\u00e9liminer l\u2019entr\u00e9e secondaire et sa petite v\u00e9randa pour les convertir en espace pour la cuisine. Toute la zone du hall de l\u2019escalier, de la cuisine et de la salle \u00e0 manger a \u00e9t\u00e9 reconfigur\u00e9e. Il \u00e9tait important pour les clients de ne pas cr\u00e9er une grande aire ouverte sur tout l\u2019\u00e9tage, qui d\u00e9naturerait la maison. Une grande paroi utile traversant la maison sert donc \u00e0 diviser l\u2019espace.  Plusieurs fonctions y ont \u00e9t\u00e9 int\u00e9gr\u00e9es, soit la garde-robe d\u2019entr\u00e9e et une grande armoire \u00e0 balais du c\u00f4t\u00e9 du hall et la zone r\u00e9frig\u00e9rateur et four encastr\u00e9 du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la cuisine. L\u2019espace \u00e9tant restreint, l\u2019am\u00e9nagement de la cuisine est peu conventionnel. En son c\u0153ur tr\u00f4ne un grand ilot travaill\u00e9 en placage de bois agenc\u00e9 \u00e0 la teinte des moulures d\u2019origine de la maison. Il fait face \u00e0 la salle \u00e0 manger et permet aux clients d\u2019interagir avec leurs convives lors de soir\u00e9es. L\u2019ilot est mis en valeur par un grand volume lin\u00e9aire en bois teint noir avec ses poign\u00e9es rondes faites sur mesures. Il regroupe le garde-manger et le coin d\u00e9jeuner dissimul\u00e9. L\u00e9g\u00e8rement en retrait, dans l\u2019ancienne entr\u00e9e secondaire, se trouve la zone nettoyage avec son comptoir profond et sa grande fen\u00eatre en coin s\u2019ouvrant sur la cour arri\u00e8re. Les interventions sont trait\u00e9es tout en finesse, tels les murs recouverts de panneaux d\u2019\u00e9b\u00e9nisterie qui accentuent le cachet et le nouveau palier de marbre qui redonne de la noblesse \u00e0 l\u2019escalier d\u2019origine restaur\u00e9.
