The apartment comprises an open-plan kitchen and dining area, a living room, two bedrooms and a helper\u2019s room. The greatest challenge of renovating this apartment was the conservative partitioning. The design approach was to create a light-filled open space to broaden the home, creating a flexible space.<br \/>\nThe entry is decorated with a set of playful coat hooks in different sizes arranged freely on the wall. Not only adding playfulness to the originally plain wall, but the diverse range of sizes also makes them practical in an arrival area; guests can hang their coats, hats or bags once they arrive at the apartment. Another side is a built-in shoe cabinet with LED light strips installed on the top and bottom, lighting up the narrow entryway.<br \/>\nThe entry then leads into a reception room. The reception room and the living room are separated with a raised platform that lifts to reveal hidden storage, it also allows guests to sit and form a close, intimate gathering. With a LED strip placed under the edge of the platform, creating an illusion of floating. The reception room was deliberately left blank. The area can be transformed into a reading area while the current study room can be emptied for the newborn in the future.<br \/>\nThe reception room and dining room is connected with an oak color frame opening.  Framing the view of the dining room with a backdrop of a full-height cabinet emphasizes the transition of space. The use of an extendable table intervenes in the living area, breaking the boundary and bridging the kitchen and the living room. The ceiling is decorated with a woven reed textured wallpaper, which gives a strong sense of Japanese tea room, creating a relaxing environment.<br \/>\nThe existing beam is expressed and wrapped with a mint color wallpaper, which is used to define the kitchen from the dining room. The L-shaped worktop provides sufficient space for the clients to prepare meals and still be able to socialise with guests seating in the dining room. The storage below houses all the electric appliances and utensils, while shelves above display all the dry ingredients which can be easily reached while cooking.<br \/>\nThe helper\u2019s room currently serves as a storeroom and was designed for the future need of hiring a helper. The original partition walls were replaced with a set of built-in cabinets, dividing the helper\u2019s room, the kitchen and the corridor, providing plenty of storage space while retaining reasonable space for the helper.<br \/>\nFor the master bedroom, oak slats are used on two sides of the wardrobe, creating texture and adding interest to the design. A headboard with LED lighting on top that penetrates through emphasizes the slightly greenish wallpaper, adding color to the otherwise white interior. A double sliding door with a champagne stainless-steel frame and patterned glass can be slid open to connect with the master bedroom, increasing the visual space.<br \/>\nThe bathroom was inspired by Japanese design where the dry and wet zones are separated. With two systems installed, efficient airflow between three areas can be created. The glass and solid partition balance privacy and openness, allowing a better experience for both to occupy the bathroom. The main goal of the design was to broaden the home and minimize the corridor space, creating a flexible space.<br \/>\nConsidering the family size of the client is relatively small, there was a potential of increasing the social areas and narrowing down the number of rooms. Therefore, the design aims at creating an open-plan layout in the common areas, hence the movement between the kitchen, dining, living room flowed easily. The bedroom next to the living room was demolished and turned into the dining room, connecting with the living room, forming one coherent space. By enclosing the existing corridor opening, creating a wider wall in the living room allows the client to place a larger L-shaped sofa. The original enclosed kitchen was then opened up to combine with the dining room, creating a large open area for family gatherings. A set of built-in cabinets was placed in the kitchen, aligning the wall in the dining room, creating a partition separating the helper\u2019s room from the kitchen and corridor. By doing so, the corridor was pushed backwards, creating a shorter corridor and visually broadening the apartment.<br \/>\nSince the dining room was moved backwards, that has doubled the size of the living room, created a reception room. The reception room can be used as an extension of the dining room whenever there are gatherings and more space is needed. It was also deliberately left blank as a space for clients\u2019 interpretation, for example, it can be used as yoga, fitness or meditation space. Considering the long-term use, the furniture in the study room was designed to able to fit into the reserved area. The study room can be transformed into babies&#39; room when a new family member comes to birth in the future. This shows the considerations that are put into designing a flexible interior that suits clients&#39; needs.<br \/>\nThe wall of the master bathroom was pushed towards the corridor, creating a larger bathroom. It was then divided into three parts: the shower space, toilet space and the handwashing area. The concept is to create a bathroom with three areas that can be used separately; one will not interrupt another while using. The position of three spaces is then rearranged, with the handwash area in the middle, which also makes it a transition space connecting the toilet and shower area. Solid walls are added between each area to increase privacy while glass doors are used to enlarge the space visually, which balance privacy and openness.
