The tower is conceived as a monumental, 93-feet tall musical instrument holding 40 wind chimes, commemorating the 40 passengers and crewmembers on the plane. Inspired by final conversations from the plane, it is intended to be a living memorial in sound to remember the 40 through their ongoing voices.<\/p>\n<p>As a landmark near the park entrance, the Tower of Voices symbolically introduces the memorial theme. The tower form is an enclosure that cradles the 40 chimes and opens towards the public plaza on which it stands. Eight precast concrete columns with branch connectors abstractly recall the trunk and branch structure of trees in the Hemlock grove at the crash site. Openings allow wind to pass through to activate the chime assemblies that include aluminum tubes of various lengths tuned to different frequencies. <\/p>\n<p>As an original work of public art, the tower design required a unique design process and combination of consultants, including a musician, chimes artist, structural, acoustical and wind engineers and sail designer.
