de l&#39;aviation civile internationale (OACI) est une institution sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e des Nations unies qui fut cr\u00e9\u00e9e par les \u00c9tats-Unis en 1944 en vue de g\u00e9rer et d&#39;administrer la Convention relative \u00e0 l&#39;aviation civile internationale. Le si\u00e8ge international de l&#39;OACI est situ\u00e9 dans une tour de 18 \u00e9tages au c\u0153ur de Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p>Cohlmeyer s&#39;est vu confier le contrat de reconfiguration et de modernisation des cuisines sur 6 \u00e9tages, lesquelles sont partag\u00e9es par plusieurs d\u00e9l\u00e9gations internationales.<\/p>\n<p>La taille et l&#39;emplacement des cuisines varient d&#39;un \u00e9tage \u00e0 l&#39;autre, mais elles occupent toutes des espaces longs et \u00e9troits.  Les cuisines d&#39;origine \u00e9taient situ\u00e9es le long du mur du fond, le chemin menant \u00e0 la zone de pr\u00e9paration des repas \u00e9tant jalonn\u00e9 de photocopieurs, de tables, d&#39;espaces de travail et de poubelles de recyclage.  L&#39;utilisateur devait se frayer un chemin pour se rendre \u00e0 la cuisine et devait rencontrer des personnes qui utilisaient la pi\u00e8ce \u00e0 d&#39;autres fins.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019approche conceptuelle fut orient\u00e9e par deux id\u00e9es principales:<br \/>\n1.\tTirer profit de la longueur et de l\u2019\u00e9troitesse des espaces<br \/>\n2.\tCr\u00e9er un design unique qui allait pouvoir s&#39;adapter \u00e0 tous les espaces allou\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Pour tirer parti de l&#39;espace \u00e9troit et long, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de placer les cuisines dans le sens de la longueur dans chaque pi\u00e8ce, du c\u00f4t\u00e9 oppos\u00e9 \u00e0 la porte d&#39;entr\u00e9e. L&#39;emplacement de la porte variait d&#39;un espace \u00e0 l&#39;autre et la cuisine devait s&#39;adapter en fonction de l&#39;emplacement de la porte<\/p>\n","en":"<p>The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations established by the States in 1944 to manage and administer the Convention on International Civil Aviation.  ICAO\u2019s international headquarters are located in an 18-story tower in the heart of Montreal.<br \/>\nCohlmeyer was awarded a contract to re-configure and modernize the kitchens on 6 floors that are shared by multiple international delegations.<br \/>\nThe kitchens varied in size and location on each floor but were all long and narrow spaces.  The original kitchen was located along the end wall with the pathway to the food preparation area filled with a variety of photocopiers, tables, workspaces, and recycling bins.  The user had to navigate their way to get to the kitchen area and was confronted with people using the room for other purposes.<br \/>\nThe Design approach was defined by 2 principal ideas:<br \/>\n1.\tUse the long linear space to our advantage<br \/>\n2.\tCreate a single design that fits every required space.<br \/>\nThe design process began by negotiating with the client that in order to make a welcoming and elegant kitchen, all non-kitchen-related elements needed to find another home, ie photocopiers, extraneous work areas).  This was harder than it sounds.<br \/>\nTo make use the of long narrow space it was decided to locate the kitchens lengthwise in every room on the side opposite of the entry door. Les supports de la table, fabriqu\u00e9s \u00e0 l&#39;aide de ferrures pour voiliers, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ancr\u00e9s au mur afin de d\u00e9gager le sol de tout obstacle.   Le design ondul\u00e9 de la table favorise le dialogue entre 2 ou 3 personnes.  Chaque vague cr\u00e9e une zone de rencontre.  Deux luminaires muraux sont plac\u00e9s vis-\u00e0-vis chaque vague, cr\u00e9ant ainsi des zones de rencontre.<\/p>\n<p>Le miroir, situ\u00e9 devant la table, a \u00e9t\u00e9 plac\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 augmenter la profondeur de l&#39;espace parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 son \u00e9troitesse et \u00e0 sa longueur.  Plus important encore, le miroir permet le contact entre les personnes qui sont assises \u00e0 la table et celles qui utilisent la zone de pr\u00e9paration de la cuisine.  Cela encourage les \u00e9changes informels entre les deux espaces.<\/p>\n","en":"<p>The Client outlined the importance of reconfiguring the existing kitchen space to encourage employees from each delegation to congregate in the designated kitchen area.  Delegates had not been using the kitchen areas except for dishwashing and photocopying.  <\/p>\n<p>We created a fluid space that allowed users to easily cross paths without interruption.<\/p>\n<p>We located the refrigerator at the farthest end of the kitchen so the swing of the door would not impede movement through the space.  The wall-mounted table was located in line with the door and pushed back as far as possible.  Table supports were made with sailboat hardware and anchored to the wall in order to clear the floor of any impediment.   The wave design of the table encourages discourse between 2 \u2013 3 people.  Each wave sets up a zone of encounter.  Two wall mounted light fixtures are centered with each wave to create a focal zone to congregate.<\/p>\n<p>The mirror, located in front of the table, was positioned to expand the depth of space along with the long narrow space.  More importantly, the mirror allows contact between people that are sitting at the table and those who are using the kitchen prep area. The accent wall is composed of veneer-covered plywood and the joints are covered by hardwood trim piece.  It is a modest art piece that uses simple geometric shapes and is easily adjustable given the different sizes of each kitchen area. Il fallait donc concevoir un seul mod\u00e8le pour tous les \u00e9tages plut\u00f4t que de cr\u00e9er un mod\u00e8le personnalis\u00e9 pour chaque cuisine, tout en r\u00e9duisant consid\u00e9rablement les co\u00fbts.<\/p>\n<p>Le module de cuisine, la table et le mur d&#39;accent pouvaient tous s&#39;adapter \u00e0 chacun des espaces de cuisine d\u00e9sign\u00e9s.  Les mat\u00e9riaux utilis\u00e9s \u00e9taient peu co\u00fbteux et les estimations pr\u00e9liminaires des co\u00fbts ont montr\u00e9 que l&#39;utilisation de contreplaqu\u00e9 recouvert de stratifi\u00e9s de qualit\u00e9 commerciale co\u00fbtait le m\u00eame prix que l&#39;utilisation de bois de fr\u00eane d&#39;origine locale.  <\/p>\n","en":"<p>At the project&#39;s outset, the client\u2019s intentions were to renovate 11 kitchens, but after preliminary design studies and thorough cost estimates by the Architect, the client was advised to reduce the mandate to 6 kitchens in order to keep the project under $300k.  It is must be understood that construction costs were inflated due to high levels of security that the Contractor and the Sub-Contractors were obliged to respect. Work was also only permitted after working hours so as not to interrupt regular use of the building.  <\/p>\n<p>The kitchen had to fit within the smallest confines of the smallest space.  This provided a single design for all floors without creating a custom design each for the kitchen and significantly reducing costs.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen unit, the table, and the accent wall could all adapt to each of the designated kitchen areas. Although small, the kitchen space is the only common space on each floor.  Wood was used to create a warm and comforting space or \u2018hygge\u2019 in Danish.  <\/p>\n<p>Instead of cluttering the space with multiple materials and colors, it was decided to use wood for objects that would be touched and felt by users \u2013 the cabinet doors, the table, and accent wall.  Wood was used as the only optical stimuli so as not to complicate the visual impact of the long narrow space. <\/p>\n<p>Wood is a material that handles abuse such as denting and rubbing better than most materials.  Wood ages well and often appear more attractive as it evolves over time.  Local Ash was used because it is a local hardwood that is moderately priced and provides a very rich caramel color.
