With this gesture, the form follows the structure\u2019s function, as well that of its site. The exterior is on the scale of an adjacent highway, while its interior is on that of the individual.  Calm yet confident, leaving the richness of the interior to speak for itself, the exterior embraces a nordicity of place, reflected in surface of the ice: The building\u2019s shape evokes its use, transposing the speed, dynamism, balance, and fluidity of the skater. Seen from afar, the centre slowly reveals itself to motorists through the embankments on its site, a landscape which contributes a natural screen between the building and the highway, the shape of which is in turn echoed in the envelope. <\/p>\n<p>Inside, the ring integrates a multimedia banner which conceals the building\u2019s inner mechanics while lifting the bleachers. Covered with wood, this gesture helps to maintain the project\u2019s human scale, and directs gazes towards the exterior. Premier anneau couvert de 400 m\u00e8tres au Qu\u00e9bec, il comprend \u00e9galement deux patinoires olympiques accueillant patinage de vitesse courte piste, patinage artistique ou hockey, ceintur\u00e9s par une piste d\u2019athl\u00e9tisme de 465 m\u00e8tres de trois corridors.<\/p>\n<p>La forme du b\u00e2timent \u00e9voque son usage, v\u00e9ritable transposition du mouvement int\u00e9rieur en faisant r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la vitesse, au dynamisme, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quilibre et la fluidit\u00e9 du patineur. L\u2019am\u00e9nagement int\u00e9rieur s\u2019en inspire afin d\u2019accompagner spectateurs et patineurs. Ici l\u2019espace est ouvert, lumineux, connect\u00e9 sur l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur favorisant ainsi tant la lumi\u00e8re naturelle que la pratique des sports dans un contexte innovant. Le volume du projet, suspendu, d\u00e9gage une fenestration de 360 degr\u00e9s, o\u00f9 l\u2019espace ouvert contribue \u00e0 la lisibilit\u00e9 des espaces, des circulations et la perm\u00e9abilit\u00e9 avec l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur.<br \/>\nL\u2019int\u00e9rieur, sobre, laisse place aux activit\u00e9s sportives qui s\u2019y d\u00e9roulent, les gradins, espaces m\u00e9caniques, r\u00e9gies int\u00e9gr\u00e9s dans le volume, renfor\u00e7ant ici le geste architectural.  Ici le dialogue s\u2019\u00e9tablit maintenant entre voir et se faire voir, entre admirer le paysage et d\u00e9voiler l\u2019activit\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure. L\u2019anneau suspendu, int\u00e8gre un bandeau multim\u00e9dia pour les activit\u00e9s d\u2019animation. Le bois accompagne le visiteur, depuis l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son parcours de course int\u00e9rieure. Il se glisse entre les plis du bandeau, soigneusement d\u00e9coup\u00e9, accompagnant le mouvement gracieux des patineurs. Une touche de bleu contribue \u00e0 orienter les visiteurs \u00e0 travers cet espace ou chaque geste mesur\u00e9 rend hommage \u00e0 ce sport magnifique et o\u00f9, pour une premi\u00e8re fois, les patineurs sont au c\u0153ur du paysage, sous cet anneau d\u00e9licatement suspendu. <\/p>\n","en":"<p>The floating ring<\/p>\n<p>Located on the site of the former Ga\u00e9tan Boucher outdoor ice ring and annexed to the Centre sportif de Sainte-Foy, the Centre de glaces de Qu\u00e9bec required a sensitive approach that would promote community appropriation and user comfort. At 400 metres, the project is the first indoor ice skating ring of this size in Quebec, and includes two Olympic-sized rinks for short-track speed skating, figure skating and hockey, all surrounded by a 465-metre athletic track with three lanes.<\/p>\n<p>To promote openness between the centre\u2019s users and the outside world, the volume surrounding the ice was raised to create a 360-degree window. With this gesture, the form follows the structure\u2019s function, as well that of its site. The exterior is on the scale of an adjacent highway, while its interior is on that of the individual.  Calm yet confident, leaving the richness of the interior to speak for itself, the exterior embraces a nordicity of place, reflected in surface of the ice: The building\u2019s shape evokes its use, transposing the speed, dynamism, balance, and fluidity of the skater.
