L\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville de Westmount est un b\u00e2timent de style n\u00e9o-Tudor con\u00e7u par les architectes Robert et Frank Findlay, qui sont des figures importantes de cette p\u00e9riode de l\u2019architecture de Westmount. Ils ont d\u2019ailleurs contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la conception de b\u00e2timents civiques d\u2019importance et de plusieurs r\u00e9sidences priv\u00e9es. <\/p>\n<p>Dans le cadre du centenaire de l\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville de Westmount, b\u00e2timent \u00e9rig\u00e9 en 1922, un projet de restauration g\u00e9n\u00e9rale s\u2019est d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 en quatre phases afin d\u2019assurer la p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 de ce b\u00e2timent, symbole important du patrimoine b\u00e2ti au sein de la communaut\u00e9. <\/p>\n<p>Lors de la premi\u00e8re phase (2019-2020), la restauration de l\u2019enveloppe de ma\u00e7onnerie, compos\u00e9e de moellons \u00e9bauch\u00e9s de pierres de calcaire de provenance locale et de pierres de taille en calcaire de l\u2019Indiana pour les ornements et l\u2019habillage des ouvertures, a \u00e9t\u00e9 effectu\u00e9e. <\/p>\n<p>Lors de la deuxi\u00e8me phase (2020-2021), le remplacement et la restauration des toitures et de leurs composantes connexes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 entrepris, notamment la section faite d\u2019ardoises mauves et vertes du Vermont, un mat\u00e9riau fid\u00e8le au choix d\u2019origine, assurant qualit\u00e9, durabilit\u00e9, performance globale \u00e0 long terme et esth\u00e9tisme. <\/p>\n<p>Pr\u00e9sentement en cours, la troisi\u00e8me phase permettra la restauration des composantes d\u2019\u00e9b\u00e9nisterie originales, dont les larges fen\u00eatres \u00e0 meneaux de plomb faites de sapin de Douglas et les portes de ch\u00eane menuis\u00e9es. Les travaux se termineront ensuite par un projet de reprise de l\u2019am\u00e9nagement paysager, qui s\u2019ins\u00e8re dans le parc de l\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville et le parc Garden Point, ainsi que dans la perc\u00e9e visuelle entre le c\u00e9notaphe de l\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville et la rue Sherbrooke Ouest. Ce nouvel am\u00e9nagement permettra de mettre en valeur la fa\u00e7ade qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 largement dissimul\u00e9e durant les derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies. <\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ensemble affiche une multitude de techniques de construction et de mat\u00e9riaux nobles : ardoise, solinages de cuivre, pierres \u00e0 moellons \u00e9quarris, pierres de taille, larges fen\u00eatres \u00e0 meneaux de plomb faites de sapin de Douglas et portes en bois de ch\u00eane menuis\u00e9es. La restauration n\u00e9cessite une recherche sur les techniques d\u2019origine, les mat\u00e9riaux utilis\u00e9s et la mani\u00e8re appropri\u00e9e d\u2019intervenir sur ces assemblages particuliers. Pour ce mandat, la restauration des composantes existantes est privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e afin de conserver le plus possible les \u00e9l\u00e9ments originaux. Lorsqu\u2019un remplacement est n\u00e9cessaire, l\u2019utilisation d\u2019une composante de m\u00eame nature et de m\u00eame provenance est alors s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Tout au long du projet, le respect du patrimoine, des caract\u00e9ristiques d\u2019origine et de la qualit\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 au c\u0153ur des d\u00e9cisions qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 prises. \u00c0 cet \u00e9gard, il \u00e9tait \u00e9vident que les diff\u00e9rents intervenants du projet, clients, ing\u00e9nieurs, artisans et entrepreneurs partageaient cette sensibilit\u00e9, ce qui a permis le respect des budgets, et l&#39;ensemble a \u00e9t\u00e9 une r\u00e9elle r\u00e9ussite malgr\u00e9 les contraintes et les d\u00e9fis. <\/p>\n","en":"<p>The city of Westmount is an exemplary model of a 19th century Victorian suburb and is classified, since 2009, as a National Historic Site of Canada. The Westmount City Hall, built in 1922, is a neo-Tudor style building designed by architects Robert and Frank Findlay. These architects were influential figures in the architectural landscape of Westmount, contributing to the design of important civic buildings and several private residences throughout Westmount.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Centennial, Westmount City Hall launched a 4-phase general restoration project to ensure the sustainability of the building as it is an important symbol of architectural heritage within the city and community.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase (2019-2020) consisted in the restoration of the exterior walls. The walls are composed of rubble stone masonry made with local limestone and the ornamental stones are made of Indiana limestone. <\/p>\n<p>During the second phase (2020-2021), all of the roofs were restored and renovated. The purple and green Vermont slate which was used is a material faithful to the original choice, ensuring quality, durability, overall long-term performance and aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>The third phase is currently in progress, and targets the restoration of all the wooden elements of the building, including the large oak doors and the windows made of Douglas Fir with lead mullions. The work will then conclude in its final phase with a landscaping project.  The landscaping design takes into consideration the City Hall Park and Garden Point Park in order to create a visual link between the City Hall the Cenotaph and Sherbrooke Street West. The new landscaping will also reveal the facades of the building which have largely been concealed in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, the project displays a multitude of construction techniques and noble materials: slate roofs, copper flashings, squared rubble stone masonry, square-cut stone masonry, large lead-mullioned windows made of Douglas fir and oak doors. This restoration project required research on the construction techniques and materials used at the time as well as into the appropriate interventions that can be executed on these particular assemblies.  For this mandate, the restoration of the existing components was preferred in order to preserve as much as possible the original elements. When replacement was necessary, the use of materials and components of the same nature and source was then selected. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout the project, respect for heritage, original features and quality were at the heart of the decisions that were made. Prior to the restoration, a building assessment was carried out to establish the intervention criteria as well as the heritage approach to adopt.  The sensitive nature of the interventions required sampling of certain zones to ensure the desired results and confirm the hypothesis made on the restoration process. <\/p>\n<p>Restoration of buildings requires research into the construction techniques and materials used at the time of construction as well as consideration of the appropriate interventions that can be executed on these particular assemblages. In this project, the restoration of existing components was prioritized in order to preserve as much as possible the original elements. When replacement was necessary, materials and components of the same nature and source were selected.<\/p>\n<p>This project consisted of four phases of restoration: masonry restoration (2019-2020), restoration and renovation of the roofs (2020-2021), restoration of all wood elements including doors and windows (2022-2023) and the landscaping (planned for 2024).<\/p>\n<p>The building is a mixed construction of load-bearing masonry, steel and concrete. The roof structure is made of steel and wood. The walls are composed of rubble stone masonry made with local limestone; the ornamental stones and details are made of Indiana limestone.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase of restoration consisted of general masonry work: complete repointing of masonry joints, the reconstruction of large sections of walls and laser cleaning of the carved stone ornaments. A large quantity of stones were also either repaired, restored or replaced. The monumental staircases were rebuilt and the two original lampposts made of bronze were restored by a lamp maker. The goal was to ensure the overall long-term performance of the building envelope and maintain its distinctive aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>In the second phase the roofs of the building were restored and renovated with purple and green Vermont slate. The assemblage of the different tones and colours of slate was a collaborative work in order to reproduce the original design. The restoration also included low-pitched roofs, a copper skylight and traditional copper tin-smithing assemblies. The solution proposed for the restoration of these details respected the aesthetics all while solving the problematic details and integrating modern components.<\/p>\n<p>This year, large Douglas fir windows with lead mullions and wood-worked oak doors will be restored. The work will then conclude in its final phase with a landscaping project. L\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville de Westmount est un b\u00e2timent de style n\u00e9o-Tudor con\u00e7u par les architectes Robert et Frank Findlay, qui sont des figures importantes de cette p\u00e9riode de l\u2019architecture de Westmount. Ils ont d\u2019ailleurs contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la conception de b\u00e2timents civiques d\u2019importance et de plusieurs r\u00e9sidences priv\u00e9es. <\/p>\n<p>Dans le cadre du centenaire de l\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville de Westmount, b\u00e2timent \u00e9rig\u00e9 en 1922, un projet de restauration g\u00e9n\u00e9rale s\u2019est d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 en quatre phases afin d\u2019assurer la p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 de ce b\u00e2timent, symbole important du patrimoine b\u00e2ti au sein de la communaut\u00e9. <\/p>\n<p>Lors de la premi\u00e8re phase (2019-2020), la restauration de l\u2019enveloppe de ma\u00e7onnerie, compos\u00e9e de moellons \u00e9bauch\u00e9s de pierres de calcaire de provenance locale et de pierres de taille en calcaire de l\u2019Indiana pour les ornements et l\u2019habillage des ouvertures, a \u00e9t\u00e9 effectu\u00e9e. <\/p>\n<p>Lors de la deuxi\u00e8me phase (2020-2021), le remplacement et la restauration des toitures et de leurs composantes connexes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 entrepris, notamment la section faite d\u2019ardoises mauves et vertes du Vermont, un mat\u00e9riau fid\u00e8le au choix d\u2019origine, assurant qualit\u00e9, durabilit\u00e9, performance globale \u00e0 long terme et esth\u00e9tisme. <\/p>\n<p>Pr\u00e9sentement en cours, la troisi\u00e8me phase permettra la restauration des composantes d\u2019\u00e9b\u00e9nisterie originales, dont les larges fen\u00eatres \u00e0 meneaux de plomb faites de sapin de Douglas et les portes de ch\u00eane menuis\u00e9es. Les travaux se termineront ensuite par un projet de reprise de l\u2019am\u00e9nagement paysager, qui s\u2019ins\u00e8re dans le parc de l\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville et le parc Garden Point, ainsi que dans la perc\u00e9e visuelle entre le c\u00e9notaphe de l\u2019h\u00f4tel de ville et la rue Sherbrooke Ouest. Ce nouvel am\u00e9nagement permettra de mettre en valeur la fa\u00e7ade qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 largement dissimul\u00e9e durant les derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies. <\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ensemble affiche une multitude de techniques de construction et de mat\u00e9riaux nobles : ardoise, solinages de cuivre, pierres \u00e0 moellons \u00e9quarris, pierres de taille, larges fen\u00eatres \u00e0 meneaux de plomb faites de sapin de Douglas et portes en bois de ch\u00eane menuis\u00e9es. La restauration n\u00e9cessite une recherche sur les techniques d\u2019origine, les mat\u00e9riaux utilis\u00e9s et la mani\u00e8re appropri\u00e9e d\u2019intervenir sur ces assemblages particuliers. Pour ce mandat, la restauration des composantes existantes est privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e afin de conserver le plus possible les \u00e9l\u00e9ments originaux. Lorsqu\u2019un remplacement est n\u00e9cessaire, l\u2019utilisation d\u2019une composante de m\u00eame nature et de m\u00eame provenance est alors s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Tout au long du projet, le respect du patrimoine, des caract\u00e9ristiques d\u2019origine et de la qualit\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 au c\u0153ur des d\u00e9cisions qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 prises. \u00c0 cet \u00e9gard, il \u00e9tait \u00e9vident que les diff\u00e9rents intervenants du projet, clients, ing\u00e9nieurs, artisans et entrepreneurs partageaient cette sensibilit\u00e9, ce qui a permis le respect des budgets, et l'ensemble a \u00e9t\u00e9 une r\u00e9elle r\u00e9ussite malgr\u00e9 les contraintes et les d\u00e9fis. <\/p>\n","en":"<p>The city of Westmount is an exemplary model of a 19th century Victorian suburb and is classified, since 2009, as a National Historic Site of Canada. The Westmount City Hall, built in 1922, is a neo-Tudor style building designed by architects Robert and Frank Findlay. These architects were influential figures in the architectural landscape of Westmount, contributing to the design of important civic buildings and several private residences throughout Westmount.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Centennial, Westmount City Hall launched a 4-phase general restoration project to ensure the sustainability of the building as it is an important symbol of architectural heritage within the city and community.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase (2019-2020) consisted in the restoration of the exterior walls. The walls are composed of rubble stone masonry made with local limestone and the ornamental stones are made of Indiana limestone. <\/p>\n<p>During the second phase (2020-2021), all of the roofs were restored and renovated. The purple and green Vermont slate which was used is a material faithful to the original choice, ensuring quality, durability, overall long-term performance and aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>The third phase is currently in progress, and targets the restoration of all the wooden elements of the building, including the large oak doors and the windows made of Douglas Fir with lead mullions. The work will then conclude in its final phase with a landscaping project.  The landscaping design takes into consideration the City Hall Park and Garden Point Park in order to create a visual link between the City Hall the Cenotaph and Sherbrooke Street West. The new landscaping will also reveal the facades of the building which have largely been concealed in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, the project displays a multitude of construction techniques and noble materials: slate roofs, copper flashings, squared rubble stone masonry, square-cut stone masonry, large lead-mullioned windows made of Douglas fir and oak doors. This restoration project required research on the construction techniques and materials used at the time as well as into the appropriate interventions that can be executed on these particular assemblies.  For this mandate, the restoration of the existing components was preferred in order to preserve as much as possible the original elements. When replacement was necessary, the use of materials and components of the same nature and source was then selected. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout the project, respect for heritage, original features and quality were at the heart of the decisions that were made.
