Mindful of respecting the heritage of the building in which they were making an intervention, architect Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Westmount Square, the designers carried out their major transformation of the space while taking into account the spirit of the site. The apartment on the 16th floor enjoys generous fenestration, which is reflected in the large black cabinets in the living room and bedroom. Indeed, the design revolves around the use of black and anthracite grey materials and furniture to impart an intimate, sophisticated feel. In contrast, the original coffered ceiling and the outer wall’s columns and curtains are white, as is the glass-enclosed ensuite washroom. The result is an interplay of light and shade that fosters an intimate ambiance, and a theatrical setting for observing the city beyond.<\/p>\n
The jury appreciated the functionality of the spaces and the traditional aspect of the interior design, which in no way detracts from the latter’s remarkable qualities. The designers intelligently reimagined the available space while respecting the broader exterior environment into which the space was integrated.
