Adding an extension to the1865 Montmagny Courthouse heritage building presented a number of challenges. The goal was to respect the original volume and period features while allowing for contemporary architectural expression. The complexity of managing the relationships between the various spaces and the building\u2019s heritage character imposed major constraints on the project. The need to transform the building was nevertheless of prime importance, given the courthouse\u2019s functional ineffectiveness, lack of space and state of disrepair. The concept is a minimalist architectural framework enveloping the heritage building. Inside, the use of light-coloured wood further adds to the space\u2019s natural brightness. A magnificent staircase of dyed black ash wood creates a weighty sculptural contrast with the lightness of the overall design, which never undermines but rather anchors the space. The lighting interrupts the architectural lines, and the play of materials brings everything into balance.
